Library Makeover with the Property Brothers
Updated: Feb 27
The Property Brothers, Lowe's Home Improvement, Heart of America and Harper Collins all teamed up to surprise our youth with a brand new learning center!
This new beginning for our space is sure to propel us forward on our mission of #BuildingGreatFutures at the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem.
“Millions of children consider Boys & Girls Clubs their home away from home, which is why these critical renovations are so important,” said Colleen B. Penhall, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Lowe’s.
“Lowe’s Heroes – our employee volunteers – are so proud to help build future leaders by creating safe and inspiring places for children at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.”
Jill Heath, Heart of America’s President and CEO agrees, “the student designers envisioned a place with bright colors, modern seating for different types of work, and creative elements that would make this space uniquely theirs.
The new learning lab will be an inspiring place to learn, filled with vital technology and idea-generating tools to encourage students to collaborate and create in new ways.
We’re proud to partner with Lowe’s and the Scott Brothers to make the students’ dreams a reality.”
The remodel kicked off in late August when a group of children from Boys & Girls Club of Harlem gathered to give the brothers’ design ideas for the space.
Together, the brothers and kids discussed several ideas that ultimately led to the design and construction of an impactful learning lab space.
“When kids and teens join our Clubs, they’re joining a supportive network of caring and inspiring individuals who are here to serve our communities and Lowe’s is a part of that network,” said Dominique Jones, Executive Director of Boys & Girls Club of Harlem.
“Thanks to Lowe’s, Heart of America and the Scotts Brothers’, we can continue to empower our youth in creative, safe buildings made to support their growth and development.”
At the reveal, Drew and Jonathan donated copies of their new children’s book, Builder Brothers: Big Plans, along with several other kids’ titles from publisher HarperCollins.
Builder Brothers tells the story of a young Drew and Jonathan, who are determined to build something big.
When their plans to build a double-decker dog house for their pets don’t go exactly as they had hoped, the brothers use problem solving and creative thinking to overcome their mistakes.
The book includes illustrations by Kim Smith and an original do-it-yourself project for parents and kids.
